thanks Martin!

had you heard about the Hertz "Dream" or "Adrenaline" collection?

from a junkyard in 1952 to the Palos Verdes Concours of 2013, this 1929 Duesenburg has seen the luxury and the decline of fortune, and come back again

I learned about this car a couple years ago from a co-worker, and did not think they'd finish it... to see it at the Palos Verdes Concours was a big surprise!

http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/06/48-years-of-family-determination-to.html

1929 Model J Duesenberg Kirchhoff Convertible Berline Sedan, J186-2208 was first purchased by the grandson of the president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.

He purchased it when his Stutz steering locked up, and later when he saw a Kirchhoff, (former foreman for Murphy's coachbuilding company) convertible sedan he had one built for his Duesy.

It was sold in the mid 40's, went through several owners, and in 1951 threw a rod through the block and was sold to a junkyard in LA.

Gil Curtright was a car enthusiast who frequently looked through the neighborhood junkyards for car parts and had actually admired the Duesy at a 1946 hot rod show, and was friends with a guy who had taken a photo of the Duesy earlier that year at a car show, and may have tipped him off to the Duesy's whereabouts, but definitely helped him haul it from the junkyard and cost him 500 dollars.

It was one of 2 Duesenbergs pulled from the junkyard that day, the other was restored in a short time and was in the Elvis movie "Spin out" http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2013/05/from-movie-spinout-elvis-movie.html

proof that making a bitchin looking combat mech from car parts is incredibly possible, and looks as good as the best Hollywood has made

I've been looking for this Bill Cosby bit about the Shelby AC Cobra that Carroll gave him on youtube before, never found it til now... Dan at Hemmings just posted it

Saturday, September 28, 2013

above is the one Carroll had the guys in the shop make for himself, and a lot of info just came out about it in an article on Hemmings last week.

"It was a car builder’s tribute to himself, so it must have been a helluva car, equivalent to, say, William Colt making a Colt revolver especially for himself.
Of note, CSX3015 wasn’t the only Twin Paxton Shelby built. While he still owned his car, after running into comedian Bill Cosby at a supermarket in Playa del Rey, California, near his condominium, Shelby chided Cosby for preferring Ferraris. Cosby reportedly retorted, “Well, you build a Cobra that will go 200 MPH and I’ll buy one.” So Shelby drove back to his factory at LAX airport and ordered another Super Snake built.
That car, CSX 3303, was only in Bill Cosby’s hands briefly. Reportedly, it scared him to death. He even recorded an album entitled “Bill Cosby at 200 MPH,” making light of the experience.  http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/09/25/incredible-barn-finds-der-snakemeisters-own/ and it's really interesting to read the comments to that post in my opinion

Such as Carroll used to be a part of a bunch of rich car enthusiasts called the Conquistadores Visatores who would run top speed from the California Nevada border to Elko Nevada, and when on one run the superchargers broke, so Shelby abandoned the car (he had many more) and it would up being bought by a songwriter, Jimmy Webb who like many others, didn't pay the IRS what they wanted, hid the car, and it eventually wound up being found in a shop after 17 years, http://www.wurthitdesigns.com/cobrastory.htm  getting bought by an Arizonian car restorer/collector/rare car seller who made it the talk of the internet by getting the Barrett Jackson machine pushing it's publicity in 2007 at the height of the car auction craze http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2007/01/carroll-shelbys-personal-cobra-sells.html

I posted about it when I first started this blog (and proves that there is cool stuff waayyy back in the archives if you ever look through them) http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2006/11/carroll-shelby-once-had-special-ac.html

of course, the question of what happened to Cosby's car...That car went to S and C Motors in San Francisco, who sold it to their customer, Tony Maxey who had a stuck throttle and plunged into lake Berryessa. The car was rebuilt by Brian Angliss in the U.K., a man who was Shelby’s nemesis through his founding of CP Autokraft, a company that made Cobra replicas. (Though one Cobra expert who, for a time had the wreck before it went to the UK, said, “When I had it, it wasn’t nothing but a stack of tubing.”)

In the U.K., the owner of the car at the time also found its original engine, which fortuitously had been sold to the builder of a hot rod in the U.K. He had to buy the hot rod to get the engine so that made the rebuild a little bit more genuine – new frame, old chassis i.d. plate, new body and old engine.

great idea for honky tonk bars and garages... old truck tailgates for bench seats! Thanks Frank!

generally useless ideas about car windows that occurred to me

would computer privacy screens work on side windows, like window tint, but where you could see out pretty well?

Would photo reactive tint or glass be a good idea for car windows, especially the ones normally tinted... they would be clear at night and cloudy or foggy days, dark on sunny days

Just a couple thoughts

perfect timing of humor to go with todays Japanese car show posts, thanks Frank!

the definitive mini van, a Subaru 360

how many vans can you look over anymore?

a door prop rod that limits the swing so your doors are open but not going to hit the nearby cars... great idea!

the difference between "nice try, you're half way done" and "Nice Job!" is who else shows up to the car show that you get compared to

nearly the same car, steering wheel, and small gauge on the far left, tach in the same place... but having the detachable steering wheel and Pro Comp speedometer  puts the lower photo in the awards race

1st indication I'm at the right parking garage for the 9th annual Japanese Classic Car Show

awww!

it's easy to spot the asshole in the parking garage, they picked the largest vehicle, the smallest parking spot, and in the worst location. They deserve a "Biggest Douchebag" award

the front bumper is over the arrow in the lane... at the corner... half a door and all the fenders and bumper more into the lane than the Civic next to it.  Is it a Long Beach parking garage thing?

lesson to learn, from this, k rails don't stop cars from flying over

the new pope bought a 1984 Renault... and the jokes about a pope and an old low quality car are numerous!

Leave it to the slapstick brothers, Tom and Ray, at Car Talk to have a field day with the news of Pope Francis’ recent present: a lovingly used 30 hp 1984 Renault 4.

As soon as the now-retired radio hosts heard the news, they went on Facebook and Twitter and let the witticisms and quips rip.

The Pope buys a 1984 Renault… Now there’s a man who believes in the power of prayer.

The pope can easily handle a flooded engine. Even if it’s of Biblical proportions.

He needs one of two bumper stickers. #1, God is my co-pilot. OR #2, My other car is the Pope Mobile.

It’s either burning oil, or you’ve just been replaced. “A little black smoke is fine, just watch out for the white smoke”.

If you see a lot of white smoke, it might mean it’s time to elect a new car. The black smoke means that a new car must still be chosen.

“Well, sir, it keeps overheating because the water in the radiator keeps turning to wine…”
